The reproduction of the Carte Physique, Routière et Politique d’Europe by Adrien Hubert Brué (1844, published by Charles Picquet) is a highly detailed (originally composed of 4 map sheets) wall map of Europe. It combines three functions: physical representation, political divisions, and road network – and shows Europe after the Congress of Vienna with later developments such as the independence of Belgium (1839). The map depicts all of Europe from the Atlantic to the Urals. Politically, the map shows the order after 1815: a fragmented German Confederation, a still disunited Italy, large empires like Russia and the Ottoman Empire, and the newly founded Belgium. A dense road network highlights the growing importance of transport and trade. The map is finely engraved and hand-colored. Colored borderlines distinguish states, while hachures represent mountains and relief. It belongs to the scientifically-oriented French cartography and reflects the stable, yet tense, phase between 1815 and the revolutions of 1848. French as the language of the map underscores France's cultural dominance at the time. It is considered an outstanding example of its era, as it combines scientific precision, political information, and practical usability (travel/trade) and documents Europe at a historical turning point.
