The map "Provincia Ecclesiastica di Guatemala nell'America Centrale" / "Ecclesiastical Province of Guatemala in Central America" shows the ecclesiastical division of Central America in the 19th century. It depicts the dioceses of Guatemala (orange, with the episcopal see of the same name), San Salvador (grey), Comayagua/Honduras (green), Nicaragua (violet), and Costa Rica (yellow, with the episcopal see of San José). To the north lies British Belize, which remains uncolored, indicating it is outside the Catholic ecclesiastical province. The map extends from the Yucatán Peninsula and the Gulf of Honduras in the north to the border with New Granada (Colombia) in the south. Numerous towns, rivers, and mountain ranges are finely drawn, as is Lake Nicaragua with its islands. The calligraphic inscriptions "Mare delle Antille" and "Oceano Pacifico" frame the map on the left and right. The clear color coding of the five Central American states vividly illustrates the ecclesiastical and political structure of the region shortly after the dissolution of the Central American Federation.
