Church Atlas | Sydney | Australia | Vintage Map
The map "Provincia Ecclesiastica di Sydney, Diocesi nella Nuova Zelanda e Vicariati Apostolici della Melanesia, Nuova Caledonia, dell'Oceania Centrale e dell'Arcipelago dei Navigatori" / "Ecclesiastical Province of Sydney, Dioceses in New Zealand and Apostolic Vicariates of Melanesia, New Caledonia, Central Oceania and the Archipelago of the Navigators (Samoa)" shows Australia ("Nuova Olanda"), New Guinea, Melanesia and New Zealand as an ecclesiastical missionary territory. Australia is colored yellow and divided into colonial regions such as New South Wales, Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania), and the Colony of South Australia, with cities like Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, and Perth. To the northeast are New Guinea (violet) and the Apostolic Vicariate of the Solomon Islands and New Britain. To the right, a network of further vicariates extends over Fiji, New Caledonia, Tonga, and the "Isole dei Navigatori" (Samoa), demarcated in green and orange. In the lower right, New Zealand is shown separately, with the Dioceses of Wellington and Auckland, colored pink and gray respectively. The map thus combines geographical accuracy with the depiction of the widely scattered Catholic missionary structure in the Southwest Pacific, including numerous small island groups and their contemporary European names.
