The map "Provincia Ecclesiastica di Messico" / "Ecclesiastical Province of Mexico" depicts the entire Mexican national territory of the 19th century, including Alta California, Nuevo México, and Texas as northern border regions. The country is divided into numerous color-coded dioceses or ecclesiastical provinces – identifiable by pastel shades of pink, green, yellow, purple, and turquoise – each representing historical bishoprics such as Sonora, Chihuahua, Durango, Guadalajara, Valladolid (Michoacán), Mexico City, Puebla, Oaxaca, and Chiapas. Bishoprics are highlighted by red dots, such as La Paz, Monterey, San Luis Potosí, Mérida, and the capital Mexico City itself. The map also shows the characteristic shape of Baja California and the Yucatán Peninsula in the southeast. Mountain ranges are depicted with hachures, and river systems are finely drawn. The calligraphic labeling of the Pacific and the Gulf of Mexico emphasizes the cartographic claim. The sheet vividly illustrates the extensive and complex diocesan structure of the young Mexican state.
