A Current Map of the South American Continent, 2025

South America, with approximately 17.8 million km², is the fourth-largest continent on Earth. It is connected to North America by the Isthmus of Panama and extends from tropical regions to subpolar areas in the south.
Geographically, it is bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the west and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. Its landscape is very diverse and includes, among other things, the Andes, which stretch along the west coast and form the longest continental mountain range in the world, as well as the Amazon Basin with the largest continuous tropical rainforest on Earth. The Amazon is also the most voluminous river in the world.
The climate ranges from tropical in the north, through arid desert regions like the Atacama, to subpolar climate zones in Tierra del Fuego.
The tropical rainforest is of central importance for the Earth. Millions of animal and plant species live in the Amazon region, many of which are found only there and have not even been fully explored yet.
