Nautical chart | Netherlands | Giclée print | 40 x 90 cm
This image shows a historical Dutch nautical chart, known as a "Paskaarte". It was created by the famous Amsterdam cartographer Johannes van Keulen and depicts the North Sea coast of the Netherlands and parts of Northern Germany. The West Frisian Islands such as Texel and Ameland are clearly visible. Important information for seafarers, such as water depths and sandbanks, was meticulously recorded here. The characteristic grid of straight lines covering the map was used for course plotting at sea. In addition to its practical use, the map is also an impressive work of art. Particularly striking are the two large, richly decorated cartouches presenting the title and the manufacturer. They are richly adorned with mythological figures such as sea gods and angels. Small drawings of ships further animate the depiction of the sea. The work is thus a typical example of highly developed Dutch cartography, which combined science and art at the highest level.
