Genoa: The map of Genoa highlights the city and its harbor and includes labels for “Suburb,” “City,” and prominent features such as “Palace” and “Old Mole.” The harbor area is meticulously detailed with depth soundings, essential for ships in the Mediterranean.
Livorno: The map of Livorno also shows the city and its harbor, highlighting trade routes as well as navigational hazards like “Mellors Reef.” Important landmarks such as the “Meloria Tower” and the “Lighthouse” are marked to aid sailors in orientation.
The entire work consists of twelve hand-colored nautical charts from the atlas “Die kleine Seefackel” / “The Little Sea Torch” by René Bougard and John Thomas Serres, published in 1801. These maps are part of a nautical chart atlas that was an indispensable tool for sailors in the age of sail. The atlas serves as a coastal guide with illustrations and maps for navigation along Europe’s Atlantic coast and in the Mediterranean.
The historic maps show traces of time and use, with these traces varying in intensity and manner depending on the map and its use. The print is a reproduction.
