The map of Naples highlights the importance of its bay, which was one of Italy's most important ports due to its size and strategic location. Naples was a significant cultural and economic center in the Mediterranean during this period.
The map of Malta emphasizes Valletta, the capital, and underscores its significance as a fortified city and important naval base in the Mediterranean. The island's complex history, influenced by various powers including the Order of Malta, is reflected in the detailed depiction of its geography and settlements.

The entire work consists of twelve hand-colored nautical charts from the atlas "Die kleine Seefackel" / "The Little Sea Torch" by René Bougard and John Thomas Serres, published in 1801. These charts are part of a nautical atlas that was an indispensable tool for sailors in the age of sailing ships. The atlas serves as a coastal guide with illustrations and maps for navigation along the Atlantic coast of Europe and in the Mediterranean.
The historical maps show traces of time and use, with these traces varying in intensity and manner depending on the map and its use. The print is a reproduction.
